2nd Gen aka Wajid Yaseen born Manchester, releases his 2nd single, And/Or, on February 12th 2001 through novamute. The single, an audacious and uncompromising amalgamation of industrial strength hip hop beats and claustrophobic splinters of sound, is taken from his forthcoming debut album, Irony Is, which was released on February 26th.
With scant regard for convention, Yaseen has remained on the periphery of musical trends. Tutored in the noise aesthetic of bands such as the Boredoms and Sonic Youth, he has striven to create a unique and intriguing sound. Spells of playing bass with the radical Fun:da:Mental and guitar with a series of trash noise bands sharpened his focus and helped refine his musical agenda. By the time he released his debut EP, Noise Sculptures, on the Flo label in 1997, he had cultivated a truly original style, fusing the intensity of his influences with contemporary and often extreme beats.
Picked up by novamute following his debut release, Yaseen went on to release the Against Nature EP in 1998, an unhinged cacophony that further explored his fascination with the extreme. By 1999 he had begun to record his self written and produced debut album. To be released in February 2001, Irony Is is an exploration of the possibilities of noise. Inspiring and at times disturbing, it rarely takes the easy route, the perfect antidote to many of today's anodyne musical forms.
An alarming hybrid of robust beats and menacing vocal fragments provided by Mau of the Dirty Beatniks, And/Or features a clutch of intriguing remixes. The album version is accompanied by a remix from the enigmatic Cold Kid that draws heavily on the hip hop nuances of the original. Si Begg’s cut and paste BuckFunk 3000 mix ducks and weaves blending the originals ragged edges with a new found bass-funk sensibility. The final mix, provided by Techno Animal features a fresh vocal take courtesy of NY rapper Dalek, transforming it into a fluent slice of languid horrorcore.
